Every great leader in history faced a defining moment – a test so severe that it taken away comfort and logic. Most people never face it. Hazrat Ibrahim Alayhi as-Salam faced it with complete surrender.
This Eid al-Adha, as Muslims around the world sacrifice in the name of Allah, I want to reflect few humble thoughts that may help recent times individuals or leaders through the story of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) and his son, Hazrat Ismail (Alayhi As-Salam)
In the world of business, we often talk about “calculated risks.” But the philosophy of Hazrat Ibrahim (Alayhi As-Salam) teaches us something far deeper that is Absolute Conviction!
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعْيَ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي أَرَىٰ فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنِّي أَذْبَحُكَ فَانظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَا أَبَتِ افْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِي إِن شَآءَ اللَّهُ مِنَ الصَّابِرِينَ
“And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, ‘O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think.’ He said, ‘O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.'” Surah As-Saffat, Ayat 102
When Allah commanded Ibrahim (Alayhi As-Salam) to sacrifice his son, it was not a simple trial. Every single circumstance made it maximally harder: Imagine the weight of test through 5 unbearable conditions.
01 Away from his community – no social support, no tribe to counsel him. Standing alone in his mission. Leaders often walk alone in their defining moments.
02 He was tested with what he loved most – his first-born son, granted to him in old age. Not easily replaceable. The rarest assets are the hardest to let go of.
03 Ismail (Alayhi As-Salam) was not just a son; he was his father’s support system, a young man of exceptional patience and character. The first success always holds the deepest emotional weight.
04 Yet, the command was personal. Ibrahim (Alayhi As-Salam) had to perform the act himself. No middleman. No delegation. True accountability means you cannot outsource your toughest responsibilities.
05 His only son at that time – No backup plan. No Plan B. Pure conviction.
And yet with all five weights pressing on his chest, he said “Yes.” He laid his beloved son down. And at that moment, Allah called out: “You have already fulfilled the vision.”
Modern leadership often feels like a series of “unbearable conditions.” Market crashes, technology shifts, and personal setbacks can make us feel like the forces are entirely against us. However, the life of Hazrat Ibrahim (Alayhi As-Salam) proves that when you align your actions with a higher truth and stay firm in your principles during testing times, the outcome isn’t just “survival”, it is a legacy. Business leaders speak of ROI. What Allah returned to Ibrahim (Alayhi As-Salam) is the greatest return any soul has ever received:
1. He didn’t just save his son; he gained
2. A great animal was sent from Heaven as blessing in his place
3. A Living Legacy: His name is honored by billions until the end of time.
4. Allah Himself sent Salaam – the greatest honour any soul can receive
5. A second son gifted – Hazrat Ishaq (Alayhi As-Salam)
6. Good news of grandson Hazrat Yaqoob (Alayhi As-Salam) – a dynasty of righteousness
7. Intergenerational Impact: A lineage of Prophets emerged from his descendants.
8. Awarded the crown of Imamat – the leadership of all humanity
9. Showered with the greatest divine blessings
10. Awarded a vast empire and worldly honour, The Crown of Imamat: He was appointed a leader for all of humanity. And many more…
Let’s derive few lessons for us – be a business leader, political leader, entrepreneur, or a family head: The market will test you. Investors will doubt you. Partnerships will collapse. The team you built with your own hands may walk away. Challenge to communicate with your family. Your most prized project – your “firstborn” idea – may need to be sacrificed at the altar of integrity, or principle, or Allah’s command.
Ibrahim (Alayhi As-Salam) was not a man who had it easy. He was a man who chose faith over fear – every single time. He was thrown into fire. He was exiled. He was commanded the unthinkable.
Shouldn’t we think and act like Hazrat Ibrahim (Alayhi As-Salam) and ask? “Am I willing to surrender my attachment to the outcome and trust the One who designed the entire universe?”
True success in this world and the hereafter isn’t found in avoiding the sacrifice, but in having the courage to face and make it. Whether you are leading an IT firm, a real estate empire, an industry, a media house, a country or any other responsibility – the questions remain the same:
1. Are you willing to stand by your principles when the “community” is against you?
2. Can you sacrifice short-term gain for long-term legacy?
3. Do you have the faith to move forward when the path seems impossible?
This Eid, let’s commit to becoming leaders who don’t just follow trends, but follow truths. Let us be “successful” – full of the wisdom that comes from faith, belief, and an unbreakable spirit. May we have the courage of Ibrahim (Alayhi As-Salam). And the patience of Ismail (Alayhi As-Salam) – who said: “Do as you are commanded. You will find me among the patient.”
